The Sapphire Sourcing & Design Guide

18ct gold ring with a blue sapphire in a light beige box by MOHSTEN

When it comes to alternative engagement rings, the sapphire is the undisputed monarch. Beloved for its breathtaking depth of colour, historic symbolism, and near-diamond toughness, a custom sapphire ring allows you to step away from the ordinary and create a modern, architectural statement piece that is entirely yours.

As a dedicated bespoke jewellery house, MOHSTEN does not limit your vision to a generic inventory. We source loose, exceptional sapphires from an elite global network, specifically selected to match your precise aesthetic, colour palette, and design.

The Sapphire Colour Spectrum: A Limitless Palette

Most people hear "sapphire" and picture a traditional, deep velvet navy. In reality, sapphires belong to the corundum mineral family and exist in a spectacular, almost infinite rainbow of colours.

Teal & Forest Green Sapphires

Combining the calming stability of deep blue with the organic warmth of rich emerald green, teal and green sapphires have exploded in modern bridal design. They offer a highly complex, moody light performance that shifts dynamically depending on whether you are in outdoor New Zealand sunlight or indoor evening lighting.

Pale Blue & Icy Sapphires

For those who want a crisp, minimalist look, pale blue sapphires provide an architectural, watercolor-like transparency. At MOHSTEN, we love setting these icy stones with 18ct white gold prongs on a solid 18ct yellow gold band to create a striking, high-contrast two-tone frame.

Parti & Bi-Colour Sapphires

A true marvel of nature, a parti sapphire features two or more distinct colour zones within a single crystal, often displaying transitions of yellow, green, and blue. Because no two stones share the same internal layout, a parti sapphire guarantees your engagement ring is entirely non-replicable.

Peach, Apricot & Yellow Sapphires

Ranging from delicate champagne-pinks to vibrant sunset apricots and bright lemon hues, warm-toned sapphires offer a radiant, romantic alternative. They pair spectacularly with high-polish yellow gold bands, catching the light with an intense, sunny brilliance.

Expert Advice: Structural Design & Durability

Why are sapphires the best choice for everyday wear?

Aside from their beauty, the primary reason we recommend sapphires above almost all other coloured gemstones is their sheer resilience. Rating a 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, sapphires are exceptionally hard and highly resistant to scratching, chipping, or abrasions. This structural integrity means your ring can easily handle everyday life for decades to come.

MOHSTEN Designer's Note: Maximising Sapphire Brilliance

Because sapphires are doubly refractive, they handle light differently than diamonds. To unlock their full optical depth, the cut proportions must be flawless. When designing your piece via our 3D CAD process, we meticulously scale your ring's gallery and claw placement to ensure maximum light can enter the pavilion of the stone, making the internal facets truly pop.

FAQ

What is the difference between heated and unheated sapphires?

Approximately 95% of sapphires on the global market undergo a traditional, stable heat treatment right after mining to improve their clarity and saturate their colour. This is an industry-standard practice. Unheated sapphires are stones that emerged from the earth with completely perfect colour and clarity entirely naturally. Because they are exceptionally rare, unheated sapphires carry a significant luxury price premium. At MOHSTEN, we can source both options based on your preferences.

Do sapphires look better in yellow gold or white gold?

It depends entirely on the stone's undertone. Cool tones (pale blues, deep navies) look clean and ultra-modern when held by white gold claws, even if the rest of the band is yellow gold. Warm tones (peach, yellow, champagne) look seamless and incredibly rich when set entirely in 18ct yellow gold. During our loose gemstone viewing sessions, we will physically place your stone against different metal components so you can see the magic happen in person.

What shapes do custom sapphires look best in?

Sapphires excel in cuts that feature large, flat facets, known as step cuts. Elongated emerald cuts, radiant cuts, and geometric radiants show off the liquid-like depth of a sapphire beautifully. If you want maximum sparkle, a custom oval or round brilliant cut will yield the highest light return.
