The MOHSTEN Ethos: Intentional Luxury

Slide image

At MOHSTEN, we believe that the most beautiful jewellery looks are those that feel intentional. True luxury should not rely on excessive mass production, opaque supply chains, or disposable trends. Instead, it should live at the intersection of architectural beauty, structural permanence, and environmental consideration.

Our ethos is not defined by corporate buzzwords, but by quiet, deliberate actions in our day-to-day practices. As a progressive New Zealand jewellery house, we are committed to minimizing our footprint while maximizing the longevity and transparency of every single masterwork we design.

This document is a living framework, a work in progress that will continuously evolve as we uncover new methods to protect our planet without ever compromising on our signature craftsmanship.

Slow Fashion: The Power of Made-to-Order Fine Jewellery

What makes a made-to-order engagement ring sustainable?

Made-to-order production is inherently sustainable because it eliminates material waste and the massive energy overruns associated with traditional retail manufacturing. At MOHSTEN, we are the antithesis of fast fashion. We do not maintain heavy, sitting inventories or produce thousands of generic pieces that sit in traditional display cabinets.

Every single MOHSTEN engagement ring and fine jewellery commission is strictly made-to-order. By engineering our pieces dynamically through our 4-step bespoke process, we ensure that every gram of precious metal and every individual gemstone is allocated to a specific love story.

Mindful Sourcing: Lab-Grown Diamonds, Natural Diamonds & Coloured Gemstones

Are MOHSTEN diamonds and gemstones ethically sourced?

Yes. Every diamond and coloured gemstone sourced by MOHSTEN complies with strict international standards to ensure ethical integrity and conflict-free origins. We believe that providing choices is a fundamental component of modern transparency, which is why we allow our clients to dictate their priorities by curating a balance of traceably sound stone origins:

  • Lab-Grown Diamonds: Offering an identical chemical, physical, and optical composition to earth-mined diamonds, our lab-grown diamonds are a flawless choice for those seeking a highly modern, conflict-free option with zero mining footprint.
  • Natural Diamonds & Coloured Gemstones: Every earth-mined diamond and rare gemstone we source is systematically vetted. We leverage a trusted, elite global network of boutique suppliers to ensure your stone is traced from source to suite with absolute integrity.

Circularity in Gold: RJC Certification & In-Studio Recycling

Precious metals carry a magnificent capacity for absolute circularity—gold can be melted down and re-engineered infinitely without ever losing its structural integrity or purity.

Is the gold used in MOHSTEN jewellery recycled?

Yes. MOHSTEN implements a dual-layered approach to circular precious metals by combining certified ethical casting with a strict, zero-waste in-studio recycling loop:

  1. Responsible Casting Houses: The primary casting gold used to formulate our solid 9ct, 14ct, and 18ct yellow and white gold bands is sourced exclusively from reputable, premier casting houses that hold official membership with the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). This guarantees that the metal enters our production loop under strict human rights, labour, and environmental compliance.
  2. Zero-Waste Workshop Recycling: Inside our local Auckland studio, we enforce a strict zero-waste protocol. Every single microscopic filing, gold scrap, or off-cut generated during the bench-setting, sizing, and hand-polishing stages is meticulously captured. We melt down and recycle these premium scraps directly within our workshop, re-integrating the metal into future custom creations.

Sustainable Presentation: Recyclable & Reusable Packaging

Is MOHSTEN jewellery packaging eco-friendly?

Yes, our unboxing experience is designed to feel exceptionally premium while remaining entirely mindful of its final lifecycle. We actively reject the heavy plastic components, synthetic glossy coatings, and excessive foams standard in commercial gift wrapping.

Our custom presentation boxes are crafted strictly from high-quality, sustainable elements that can be effortlessly repurposed or recycled:

  • Woven Linen: Elegant, durable, and completely biodegradable fibres.
  • Structural Cardboard: Clean, heavy-gauge paper board engineered from recycled materials that can easily return to the circular waste stream.

Built for a Lifetime: Minimizing Waste Through Permanence

The most sustainable piece of fine jewellery is the one that never needs to be replaced. We build our pieces with an uncompromising dedication to structural geometry, appropriate metal weights, and protective claw settings.

Every MOHSTEN ring includes our lifelong aftercare program, encompassing annual suite inspections, deep ultrasonic cleaning, and proactive prong maintenance. By designing for permanence and extending the physical lifecycle of our work, we ensure your heirloom remains out of landfills and on your hand for generations.
