At MOHSTEN, we believe that fine jewellery should be more than mere adornment; it should be sculpture for the hands. In a world often dominated by hollow-cast, mass-produced pieces, we have returned to the fundamental principles of structural integrity and intentional form. A signet ring isn't just a circle of gold; it is a study in balance, weight, and a canvas for identity.
The Face of Identity: A Canvas for Your Story
Historically, the signet ring was known as the "Gentleman’s Ring," used to press a unique seal into hot wax to authenticate documents. It was a person’s signature, a physical manifestation of their authority and lineage. Today, while we no longer seal envelopes with wax, the "face" of the signet remains the most significant real estate in a jewellery collection.
When we design the face of a MOHSTEN signet, we are creating a space for personal iconography. Whether it is a minimalist set of initials, a deeply carved family crest, or a custom symbol that represents a private milestone, the design must be intentional.
-
Initials and Monograms: These are the most intimate forms of personalisation. We look at typography through an architectural lens, clean, bold lines that catch the light or fluid, engraved calligraphy that feels like a whisper of history.
-
Family Crests: For those looking to bridge the gap between the past and the future, a family crest on a signet ring is a powerful link to heritage. We take these traditional emblems and modernize them, ensuring the engraving is deep enough to last for centuries, yet refined enough to suit a modern wardrobe.
-
Symbolic Iconography: Sometimes the meaning isn't in a name, but in a symbol, a North Star for guidance, a specific flower, or a geometric pattern. These designs turn the ring into a talisman, a piece that the wearer touches subconsciously throughout the day.
The Anatomy of Strength: The 9ct Standard
The creation of a modern heirloom requires a rejection of the "fast-fashion" mindset. When we sit at the bench to carve a signature piece in our Auckland studio, we are thinking about the reality of daily wear.
We intentionally craft the majority of our signets in solid 9ct gold. Why? Because a signet is a "workhorse" piece of jewellery. 9ct gold contains a higher percentage of other metals, making it significantly harder and more durable than higher-carat golds. It is designed to withstand the school run, the boardroom, and the gym if you must, maintaining its crisp edges and sculptural form where softer metals might falter.
There is a psychological shift that happens when you put on a ring with significant weight. Most commercial signets are "honeycombed" or hollowed out behind the face to save on costs. At MOHSTEN, our signets are solid-cast. Even in 9ct, the solid nature of the build provides a "commanding presence" on the hand. It feels substantial, grounded, and permanent.
Behind the Bench: Crafting the Legacy
Every signet begins as an architectural sketch before being hand-sculpted. We focus on the "shoulder" of the ring, the way the band tapers and rises to meet the face. It must be ergonomic yet bold.
In our Remuera studio, the transition from the initial design to the final high-polish finish is a meticulous process. We ensure that the balance is perfect so the ring sits flush against the finger, never rotating, always present.
Whether you are commissioning a piece to celebrate a graduation, a promotion, or simply to begin your own family legacy, the MOHSTEN Signet is designed to be the cornerstone of your collection. It is a piece that carries the weight of your history on its face and the uncompromising strength of solid gold at its core.
